After a successful national tour ‘Subrang Arts returns to Fairfield Halls for the final show of ‘Shakuntala’ – one of India’s best literary classics. A romantic tale of love, loss and redemption, this magical theatrical extravaganza features an intergenerational cast of over 40 performers who will bring the endearing characters alive and cast a spell of rare classical charm through vibrant dances, colorful costumes, and spectacular multimedia projections. The dance drama is in Hindi with English subtitles and narration. The story is based on a mythological fairy tale weaving many elements of India’s rich cultural heritage – literature, language, history, music, dance, and drama.

Shakuntala faces a challenging life: abandoned in a forest as a baby, then forgotten by her husband, King Dushyanta, due to a curse placed upon her. When facing the prospect of raising her son alone, she learns to gain strength and raises her son Bharat who later becomes the first Emperor of India. Bharat conquered all of Greater India into a single political entity. It is after his name that India derived its name ‘Bharatvarsha’.
